I wish that the TV show, Broad City existed when I was in my teens and twenties. I could have learned to embrace myself and my body a lot earlier.
For those of you who haven’t seen the show (you’re missing out BTW), it is essentially centred around two young women trying to find themselves in NYC. “It doesn’t sound like an exciting premise!” I hear you say. Oh, but it is. You see, Ilana and Abbi (the two “kweens” who star in the show), are the face of modern feminism.
I know that on hearing the word “feminism”, many of you will groan inwardly. I promise you it’s not like that. We’re not talking Germaine Greer here (hey, that rhymed!). We’re talking two young women who are trying to figure life out. Both women are college dropouts who cycle through several jobs during the span of the series.
Abbi is a talented artist who can never quite make a career out of creating art, instead working as a cleaner at a gym, and later, as a sales assistant at Anthropology.
Ilana is unemployed for much of the series except for a stint as a waitress and also a Hillary Clinton campaign volunteer.
I am able to relate to Abbi and Ilana as it’s taken a decade to figure my shit out. I only very recently landed a job that pays well and I don’t hate. I could actually make a career out of it.
I digress, I want to talk about why I REALLY love these two women:
Ilana and Abbi don’t take shit from anyone. They don’t rely on a man to complete them . They don’t always shave their pits (it’s ok to be hairy!). They’re not Hollywood beautiful but they ARE gorgeous, in all their curvaceous glory. They also wear what they want (some of their outfits are downright insane, but fucking fabulous nonetheless). The girls are honestly, two amazing women who embody the essence of every woman.
My favourite thing though, is that these two ALWAYS have each other’s backs. It’s sisters looking out for each other.
I wish these two had been around when I was a teen because I’d have been more inclined to embrace my muffin top, my grand canyon ass (an insult an ex threw at me once), and myself in general. I also might have learned a thing or two about supporting other women, not tearing them down (don’t lie, YOU were a bitch in high school too).
Thanks for reading my ode to Broad City. I love this show so much and want all of you to love it too. If you want to wear that faux fur jacket and sequined skirt with combat boots, fucking DO IT and embrace it. Abbi and Ilana would.
